Backpacking Checklist

The 10+ Essentials (just
for reference):
- Extra clothing layer(s)
- Map of area (I'll make
copies for all)
- Drinking water
- Compass (good idea for
all to have one. I also have a GPS)
- Food
- Headlamp or flashlight
(with extra batteries/ bulbs)
- First-aid kit Sunglasses
(with retaining strap) Pocket knife
- Sunscreen
- Matches (in waterproof
container) and firestarter
Hiking Clothing:
- Quick-drying pants/shorts
- Fleece jacket or wool
sweater
- Short-sleeved shirts
(I'm bringing 2 t-shirts and maybe one more shirt)
- Wicking long underwear
(top/bottoms) maybe not necessary, but I find it a lightweight way to add
warmth at night, so I will probably bring
- Long-sleeved shirts (1
or 2)
- Regular underwear
- Warm pants--fleece or
wool (apart from my nylon hiking pants, I will have one layer for underneath,
either my fleece pants that you gave to me, or long underwear/tights)
- Swimsuit
- Fleece or wool vest (I
have one--may or may not bring it backpacking)
- Outerwear Rainwear (top/bottoms)
(may not use but should bring--can be lightweight)
- Fleece or wool gloves/mittens
(I will bring my lightest weight gloves)
- Wide-brimmed rain/sun
hat
- Warm hat (fleece or wool)
(good light way to add warmth at night)
- Bandanna
Footwear
- Hiking boots
- Hiking socks
- Extra laces
- Wicking liner socks
- Gaiters (probably not
necessary, but if you like them bring them)
- Sandals/camp shoes (I
will bring my Teva's for stream crossings/camp use)
Camping Gear
- Backpack
- Day pack (my backpack
has a removable fanny pack which I use for this)
- Matches/lighter (everyone
should have)
- Pack cover (garbage bag
will do)
- Tent (Jill and I own
two two-man tents. You are welcome to use one of them.)
- Rainfly (probably won't
need. I am the cautious type and will bring one and never use it)
- Tent stakes (I have)
- Cook set, dishes ( I
have plenty I think, but if you own some titanium pots, bring 'em!)
- Cooking/eating utensils
(I have enough probably, but if you already own lexan, bring it on)
- Drinking cup
- Pot grabber (I have one
or two)
- Biodegradable soap
- Pot scrubber/dish towel
(I can bring)
- Sleeping bag (better
be good to 30 degrees, although a 40 bag will probably do)
- Plastic garbage bags
- Resealable plastic bags
- Sleeping pad
- Water filter/purifier
(I have one, and I bring tablets as back-up. You should bring one or the other)
- Water-purification tablets
(see above)
- Sit pad or sleeping pad
chair kit (for keeping butt off cold wet ground while resting)
- Extra nylon stuff sacks
- Water bottle(s) (two
quarts each person is enough)
- Food (separate list--we
can rotate preparing meals. After we plan, I can but all items we will need.)
- Collapsible water container
(I will buy one)
- Stove and fuel ( I have
two stoves, which is enough. If you do own one you like though, let me know)
- Bear Resistant Food Container
(I will either rent of buy us one)
Personal Items
- Toilet paper
- Sun screen
- Lip balm (with sun protection)
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Insect repellent (DEET
at least 50%!)
- Small bath towel
- Brush/comb

- Altimeter (my GPS has

- Binoculars (i don't have
backpacking binocs, if you do bring them)
- 100-foot accessory cord
(I have--mainly for hanging food away from bears)
- Field guides

- Camping/fire permits
(I have arranged for--we need to pick up at park)
- Watch/alarm clock
- Fishing license (if you
want to go fishing--and there is great trout fishing--let me know and I will
get for you)
